Brand Concept

Kyoto's food culture, which has been refined and nurtured over its 1,200-year history, has developed with the times. Using carefully selected ingredients, traditional methods and innovative techniques, Kyoto creates high-quality food that continues to impress and satisfy, positioning it as a pioneer of food that will continue to innovate in the future.

With this as a background, the brand concept of "Kyoto Brand Foods" is defined as follows:

1) The blessings of the mountains, seas and countryside are created using traditional techniques and wisdom nurtured in Kyoto.

2) The maker's heartfelt sensibility is clearly conveyed to the eater.

3) We deliver the real thing along with peace of mind and safety.

The brand name "Kyoto Ginmi Hyakusen" and logo mark of Kyoto brand foods are proof that the Kyoto Prefecture Food Industry Association, a general incorporated association, has made a concerted effort to promise consumers the perceived quality of Kyoto brand foods and provide a sense of security. Kyoto's food industry cooperates to protect these foods, and they have value as a "food treasure" that must never be damaged.

Kyoto Brand Food Declaration

Kyoto is the spiritual home of the Japanese people and a historic city that is a source of pride for the world. The food culture that has been refined and nurtured within this city has been passed down through the generations and has developed over the years.

The development of Kyoto's food culture has been built on the creation of valuable, high-quality food using carefully selected ingredients, traditional methods and innovative techniques, and on the provision of excitement and satisfaction to people.

Furthermore, the "spirit of hospitality" from the maker to the eater is infused into each and every dish.

The food industry, which contributes to the creation of Kyoto's food culture, will promote "Kyoto brand foods," which embody tradition and innovation, from Kyoto to the rest of Japan and even the world, based on relationships of trust with customers.

As a pioneer in food and with the aim of advancing Kyoto's food culture, we hereby declare our products as "Kyoto Brand Foods."

"Kyoto brand food"

1) The blessings of the mountains, seas and countryside are created using traditional techniques and wisdom nurtured in Kyoto.

2) The maker's heartfelt sensibility is clearly conveyed to the eater.

3) We deliver the real thing along with peace of mind and safety.

Brand development goals

In order to ensure and improve the reliability of "Kyoto Brand Foods," we have established the "Kyoto Brand Food Certification and Quality Assurance Committee" consisting of Kyoto Prefecture, academic experts, consumers, producer groups, distributors, and industry group representatives, and our goal is to build and promote a system for certification after rigorous screening, which will form the basis for brand development.

As a result, it is expected that the products will gain a high level of trust from consumers, clearly differentiate themselves from other production areas, and continue to raise the status of "Kyoto brand foods."

We guarantee the quality and value that represents Kyoto's food culture.

About Certification

Until now, processed foods from Kyoto have maintained a relatively strong position in the domestic market, but in recent years, with the price competition, food processors and retailers from other prefectures have been mass-distributing foods using names such as "Kyoto-style XXX" and "Kyoto XXX" in order to make them appear as high-value-added products, and there have been frequent cases of these names being used in newspaper advertisements and other media.

These foods are similar but not the same as the "Kyoto brand foods" that are produced using the food culture that has been cultivated over Kyoto's long history and the advanced food processing techniques that have been honed within that culture. In fact, consumers who have purchased these foods have complained about their quality to associations in the prefecture, damaging the image of genuine Kyoto foods and causing a drop in sales.

The purpose of this project is to differentiate food products from those from other production areas by certifying them as "Kyoto Brand Foods," which are backed by high quality and tradition and are worthy of the Kyoto brand, which represents Japanese food culture, and thereby promote the Kyoto food industry and contribute to tourism.

Certification record (as of April 27, 2021)

13 participating associations (83 companies, 293 products, 586 items certified)

Greetings

In fiscal year 2004, the Kyoto Prefecture Food Industry Association, a general incorporated association, launched the Kyoto Brand Food Certification Project, which received a Kyoto Brand New Field Development Project Subsidy from Kyoto Prefecture and was implemented with the support of the Kyoto Prefectural Federation of Small and Medium Enterprises Associations.

At the beginning of the fiscal year, the project was led by seven associations: Kyoto Confectionery Cooperative, Kyoto Savory Food Business Cooperative, Kyoto Prefecture Pickles Cooperative, Kyoto Prefecture Noodle Wholesaler Cooperative, Kyoto Yuba Manufacturing and Sales Business Cooperative, Kyoto Prefecture Bread Industry Association, and Kyoto Prefecture Tofu and Fried Tofu Commerce and Industry Association. Partway through the fiscal year, the Kyoto Prefecture Canned Foods Cooperative and the Kansai Natto Industry Cooperative joined in, and with the cooperation of a total of nine associations, the Kyoto brand food product Kyoto Ginmi Hyakusen was launched.

Preparations for this project began in 2001 and took four years to complete. Encouraged by the great success achieved by the tofu industry in 2002, which led to two screening meetings in the first year, we were able to announce that a total of 270 items from nine associations and 141 companies had been certified as Kyoto Brand Foods, and we are deeply moved by this. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the members of the Kyoto Brand Food Certification Committee, including Kyoto Prefecture, Professor Minamide of Kyoto Prefectural University, expert Mr. Yokokura, consumer representatives, distributor representatives, the Kyoto Prefectural Federation of Small Business Associations and industry group representatives, as well as the companies that understood this project and applied for certification, and the media personnel who assisted in publicizing the project.

We will continue to be fully aware of the great responsibility that comes with the Kyoto Brand Food Certification Project and will strive to promote Kyoto Brand Foods, so we ask for your continued guidance and cooperation.
