Kyoto Coffee

High-quality, flavorful coffee, nurtured by the coffee shop culture beloved by Kyoto residents

overview

Kyoto is Japan's leading coffee-consuming region, and the pre-war coffee shop culture is an essential part of Kyoto residents' daily lives. The "Kyoto Coffee" that was developed there is made using only high-quality green beans produced around the world, resulting in a regular coffee with an elegant aroma, refined taste, a satisfying finish, and a refreshing aftertaste. Enjoy the flavors created by Kyoto coffee artisans that are a part of everyday Kyoto life.

History

Since the early Showa period (1930s), many coffee shops have opened in Kyoto, offering spaces designed with the owner's unique taste and authentic coffee. A diverse range of people, from fashion-conscious merchants to artisans of traditional industries, painters, writers, university professors, and students, have gathered there, fostering a unique Kyoto coffee shop culture as a place for daily relaxation and cultural exchange. Along with this, coffee has also become deeply rooted in the daily lives of Kyoto residents. Kyoto is now said to have over 2,000 coffee shops, ranging from long-established establishments beloved since before the war to cutting-edge new establishments. Kyoto also boasts one of the highest coffee consumption rates in Japan, with the entire city serving as a foundation supporting coffee shops and coffee culture.

Brand Initiatives

Products certified as "Kyoto Coffee" must be made from high-quality coffee beans with a clear national grade, and must be roasted in a factory in Kyoto Prefecture by roasters with over 10 years of experience or equivalent skills. The product's aroma, mouthfeel, drinking experience, and aftertaste are evaluated using a unique scoring standard to determine whether it matches the Kyoto brand's image of "elegant, refined, and delicious coffee." Qualified members of the Kyoto Coffee Industry Association assess and certify products that meet the standards.
